dyndns

"dyndns" is the client i am using to authenticate my network, which is assigned a single dynamic ip address, to a friendly host which has a static ip adress aly host which has a static ip adress and is running a nameserver. thus, i am able to assign a static FQDN (fully qualified domain name), i.e. a subdomain of the friendly server, to a dynamic ip address. if you want to use the dyndns client in the .ixtec.net space (also .sternhagel.org and many others) please write an email to inform@tionstechnologien.de which contains the subdomain you wish to have and a secure way to contact you (i.e. a phone number).

iX TEC dynamic dns authentication client v0.023 (.tar.gz)
this is the .tar.gzipped package of the dyndns client, containing "dyndns", an executable perl script containing the client, "dyndns.conf", the configuration file, and a readme file. it has so far been tested under linux kernels 2.2 and 2.4, and win2k. it runs now perfectly from /etc/ppp/ip-up.d. it should also run flawlessly under other win32 operating systems with a working >=perl 5.005 environment.

iX TEC dynamic dns daemon server v0.027ß (.tar.gz)
this is the .tar.gzipped package of the dyndns server, containing "dyndnsd", an executable perl script containing the server, "dyndnsd.conf", the configuration file, "dyndnsd.passwords", the password file, and a readme file. it has so far been tested under linux kernel 2.4 and freebsd. THIS IS NOT BUILT FOR PUBLIC RELEASE. be aware that this script may open dangerous security holes within your host, as it has to be run by root and does make nasty system calls, like killing off named and rewriting named's configuration files!

simple tcp client (uncompressed executable)
the tcpclient is a simple tcp communication tool, like telnet. unlike telnet, though, it works line- based and echoes everything locally. you can use it to authenticate to every dyndns server manually. it is good for bugtracking and the like.

installing instructions for the iX TEC dynamic dns authentication client

1. untar the package
tar xvfz dyndns.tar.gz

2. make sure perl is installed.

3. copy the file dyndns to wherever you want to, e.g.
/usr/bin
and make sure the appropriate permissions are set.
You should run the client as normal user, not as root.

4. copy the file dyndns.conf to
/etc
if you'd like another directory, you have to specify the config file
on the command line, or change the variable $cfg in dyndns.

5. change dyndns.conf appropriate to your setup.

7. you should now be able to run the client. Have fun!
